The scent of yesterderday - Discontinued product nostalgia

herbal-essences-old-bottle

I'll be frank with you - there is no stone I leave unturned when I'm looking for a bargain, and never more so than when it's a bargain of a beauty-product nature. I was thirsty the other day, and rather than pay £1 for a bottle of Evian, I nipped into nearby LIDL to get a 19p no-name-brand spring water instead. And while I was there, I thought I'd see if they had any beauty items worth nabbing.

Lo and behold, I found 400ml bottles of Herbal Essences shampoo and conditioner at just £1.45 each. They had a mixture of new and old versions, so I picked up the "2nd gen" conditioner in "Hello Hydration" (that's the blue coconutty one), and for old times's sake, a bottle of the old pink rose-scented "Silk'n'Shine" shampoo.

A journey back in time was soon to commence...

Chuffed with my bargain, I washed my hair with them that evening. I haven't used Herbal Essences in an age, but as soon as I lathered up with the Silk'n'Shine, I was hit with a barrage of olfactory nostalgia that took me straight back to high school when Herbal Essences were the de rigeur haircare brand of choice, and everybody's hair had that rosey scent to it. I stood in the shower for a minute or two inhaling the smell and remembering. Then I cracked open the "Hello Hydration" and rinsed away the old days, to be replaced with the rather lovely smell of tropical cocktails, in itself a little bit reminiscent of early 90's Body Shop shower gels.

There's nothing new under the sun, is there?

Other nostalgic niffs -

Charlie Red (think school disco and girl's changing rooms in high school)
CK One (a month's pocket money on that one)
Organics shampoo and conditioner (whatever happened to this??)
Matey Bubble Bath (going right back with that one)

What product aromas bring your nose back to days gone by?

  1. Body Shop Dewberry for me - everyone used it when I was at school. It was so sweet and sickly....

  2. Oh God yes... and what is a dewberry anyway? I think it's another name for a kind of blackberry, but I never heard of it outside the realms of the Body Shop myself.
